DAS - Haro Strait

Southern Resident killer whales transit Haro Strait as they pursue the salmon returning to Canadian and Puget Sound rivers. Can you be the first to hear them on a fiberoptic cable? You will also hear commercial ships and recreational boats here, and other sources of underwater noise pollution.

This node is part of a 2024-25 DAS experiment led by the University of Washington through a collaboration with Orcasound.

Status updates: 10/1/25: planned DAS deployment on a custom fiber optic cable running from Orcasound Lab into the depths of Haro Strait.
